High Tech Nostalgia – Tractor Beam

Manufacturing Content today released Tractor Beam 1.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch. The retro arcade title is part of the wave of lo-fi games released for the high tech multitouch platform. Tractor Beam combines the popular “swinging games” style of gameplay with the look of Atari’s ‘Asteroids’, adding modern features like a dynamic ambient soundtrack. It is among the new wave of games embracing the latest technology but with a nod to the classic games of eras gone by.

The game itself could be said to be a part of the popular “Swinging Games” genre recently highlighted by Apple on the App Store, along with favorites like ‘Hook Champ.’ This gameplay is then transposed to the world of arcade games circa 1979, with the player instead swinging a spaceship through an increasingly dense asteroid field.

Inspired by endless nights playing Atari’s ‘Asteroids’ and a fascination with the latest in Apple technology, Tractor Beam’s developers aimed to create an intuitive game with broad appeal that would recapture some of the glory of classic arcade games while offering the benefits of Apple’s platform, not the least of which is the ability to choose your own background music from the iPod application. Its own evolving loop-based soundtrack is something that would not have been possible in the games it emulates while the music itself is reminescent of classic science fiction movies. Continued…

Search in safari on the iphone

Atlanta, Georgia – With more and more people using Safari on the iPhone to browse the Web for work and play, the lack of in-page search functionality in this popular mobile Web browser is baffling. If one has ever used the “Edit – Find” feature of traditional Web browsers, one must wonder why it is not available in Safari on the iPhone. There are alternatives, but neither hits the mark in terms of convenience, usability, and reliability:

a) Install and use one of the third-party Web browsers available on the App Store – replacing Safari entirely.
b) Use one of the less-than-stellar “bookmarklets” circa 2007 that feature no user interface for navigation among search results and suffer from a number of technical, as well as general usability issues.

Unsatisfied with these options and tired of waiting for Apple to add in-page search to mobile Safari, the developer of Find In Page simply created his own app to deliver this missing feature to iPhone and iPod touch users via the App Store. Find In Page app delivers its functionality in the form of a “bookmarklet” – the only way new features can be added directly to the mobile Safari browser. Once installed, accessing in-page search functionality is exactly 2 taps – same as the two clicks required for “Edit – Find” in traditional browsers.

In-page search is one of the most important productivity tools for doing serious research on the Web, as well as simply getting oriented in larger webpages. It significantly reduces the amount of time required to review search engine results: instead of scanning and reading each page for relevance, you can use in-page search to look for relevant keywords, saving time and frustration. Ability to search text, especially in long webpages is critical to mastery of online content. Now this vital productivity tool is available to iPhone users.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone or iPod touch 3.0 or later

Pricing and Availability:
Find In Page 1.0 is only $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store.

Air Traffic control game – ATC Pro

ATC Pro is a realistic sim application that puts users in control of the flow of aircraft in and out of airports. Planes arrive from a map edge location, announced by an audio ding. It is up to the user to clear aircraft for takeoffs and guide each plane to its intended destination, which may be an airport or fly-over to another map edge. Any traffic coming into the simulated air traffic controller’s airspace must also be landed safely.

All aspects of flight safety are up to the user. Once they get a plane in the sky at the right altitude, users can make any adjustments necessary for the flight’s heading. Beginners are happy for the takeoff and landing tutorials that are included. The ATC Pro format differs from other air traffic simulation games. Many, if not most, use a normal radar interface. ATC Pro utilizes a USGS map approach for more interesting and realistic playing experiences. Players have the option of indulging in the disastrous side of air travel with ATC Pro. They can adjust settings to allow crashes, near misses and other emergencies, complete with a roaring fireball and other appropriate sounds and graphics.

There is a scoring system for each of the included simulated scenarios listed below:
* Handle 5 landings (practice)
* Handle 5 takeoffs (practice)
* Handle 10 aircraft landing and taking off
* Handle 20 aircraft landing and taking off
* Play Until Incident (crash or lost aircraft)
* Play 5 minute speed round
* Play 10 minute speed round Continued…
